Chrystie Street Loft

A typically expansive downtown space transformed into a warm and inviting apartment created by lifestyle tastemaker Amanda Brooks, in collaboration with her friend, interior designer, Hadley Wiggins.

The loft is located on a storied street, where vacated 20th century factories created outposts that brought on an era-defining arts scene. The objective for Plain English became a reimagining of the stripped back space to arrive at a home suited for city living. Painted wooden screens distinctly partition the once open-concept plan into functional areas for sleeping, dining, and entertaining.

This context set, a streamlined run of Spitalfields cupboards and a reduced depth Worktable run parallel and join the kitchen to the living room. The individual elements of each room shepherd movement through the apartment, each tailored to accommodate the specific needs of the given space, whether open shelving, deep drawers, or appliance housings. Well-appointed wardrobe cupboards discreetly provide necessary storage space with no interruption to everyday living.

In the materiality and detailing emerges a dialogue—the iron ‘Weymouth’ handles echo the industrial locality while the refined colour palette of ‘Kipper’ and ‘Mash’ softens the architectural vastness. The primary experience is of the quality of light that envelops and travels from room to room, becoming one.
