Manhattan’s Upper East Side

A family kitchen in an elegant apartment in Manhattan. An open plan dining area designed around a beautiful antique table with tailored bench seat allows a space for breakfasts, coffee or more casual suppers.

The kitchen needed to function well for busy family life while managing to incorporate all necessary appliances as well as laundry facilities. This was cleverly achieved by concealing a dedicated laundry area behind hand painted double doors, boasting Brass handles and Petworth cut-outs above for ventilation and interesting detail.

Space was then available for all the kitchen necessities; a generous sink, range cooker tucked into a chimney area with extractor over and plenty of storage.  The graceful colour palette is both bright and inviting, perfect for our Spitalfields cupboards and accented with brass hardware, a mixer tap and feature lighting.

The counterstanding cupboards hide small everyday appliances, keeping countertops clear. The glazed tall cupboard on the end of the island acts as a dresser to display china and serving dishes. Here, an opportunity to play with colour and seasonal accents, while ensuring everything is to hand when laying the table.  The larder cupboard holds all the dry foods and ingredients for mealtimes, also offering a spot to hide a microwave. An early decision to keep the cupboards sitting beneath the ceiling helps to elevate the space and maintain a sense of openness. An added wonderful advantage of an open plan kitchen dining room is the chef can share conversation with everyone while preparing food and the room can be enjoyed throughout.
