PARK SLOPE BROWNSTONE

An 1889 landmarked Romanesque-revival townhouse in Brooklyn, NY retains original plaster period details and manages a seamless transition with the design of the new kitchen and larder on the main floor.  A cantilevered bay window was added to the back of the building by the architect during the renovation, offering additional space to accommodate an island as well as additional light for the room. Large windows over the sink draw the gaze outside while the range cooker’s central position within two pillars gives the sense that it might be sited in an old fireplace. The client, a designer, selected “Army Camp” for the paint colour, which also connects to the outdoors, a thoughtful consideration. The larder, which can hold all the materials for entertaining, sits on the side wall. Giving it the feel of freestanding furniture was central to its relationship to the sitting room beyond and pocket doors slide neatly behind, accommodated in the room’s architrave.
